into the base and how these events unfolded? [ inaudible ] >> can you tell us how serious those injuries may be? [ inaudible ]
>> is it true we heard reports that at least there were three gunmen and at least one of them is in custody. do you know that as a fact? >> i had heard two and one gunman is in k custody. they are reporting two gunmen and there could be a third. >> thank you so much for joining us. we are going to continue our coverage now. we are going to join msnbc and its live coverage of the situation unfolding in ft. hood. >> we have from msnbc pete williams the suspect in custody is in his late 30s. while it appeared the suspects were all in military uniform,
they weren't able to confirm they were part of the military. to set the scene here, jim miklazewski, seven dead, 20 wounded. at least three different shooting areas and possibly three different shooters all in military fatigues. jim? >> david, that's right. many of these details are still sketchy at this point. according to u.s. military and army officials, the shootings began at about 1:30 central time there in texas. in the house theater and quickly spread to a processing area and a nearby sports complex. the shootings began 30 minutes before a graduatio ceremony of some time was to have occurred in that area. it's not known if any of those participants were, in fact, killed or wounded in this attack. military officials citing the number of seven dead and 20 wounded are fearful that number could still rise before the day is out. there were as many as two, maybe
three shooters. still a lot of confusion about that. as pete williams reported earlier, u.s. officials were pretty confident they were all military, but u.s. army officials are telling us that's not entirely clear yet, although they were reported to be in military uniform. armed with military style weapons, rifles. it's not clear if, in fact, the shooters are military. it's still unclear, too, at least one is in custody. as pete said, he is said to be in his 30s. there is either one or two more on the loose. the search is going on there at ft. hood. at one point a s.w.a.t. team surrounded the px at ft. hood, but there is no word that one of the shooters was in that facility. what appears to be clear, even though it's clear speculation at this point, this does not appear to be what we've seen over the
past several years after repeated deployments in iraq and afghanistan, a case of post traumatic stress disorder, but appears to be some kind of premeditated, well-planned assault. maybe as many as three gunmen. >> i've got to take our audience back to kcen. these are live images we are getting from ft. hood. >> we do know there are more than 20 people injured. we heard seven people have been lled. there have been ambulances and helicopters going all over ft. hood. at this point, we are waiting to hear who is responsible. we heard some of the shooters were wearing military uniforms earlier today. that does not mean they are soldiers. that's what we do know at this point. >> because you see somebody in fatigues, that doesn't necessarily mean ty are soldiers. we can assume they might be because this happened on post and they were in some kind of uniforms. as you say, that doesn't necessarily mean that is the case. last time we talked to you, we
heard more sirens in the background. more ambulances heading to the scene? >> at this point we haven't seen any ambulances come up through the main gate of ft. hood. that's not to say there aren't ambulances trying to get on post. we haven't seen any real helicopters. there is an emergency warning system going on post. there are several thousand families to live on post. please stay inside, stay safe, stay away from windows and doors. like we said, there are a lot of unanswered questions. there could still be two shooters out there. >> just hospital we are looking at off to your side, is that metroplex or darnell medical center? >> it is a major medical center. they do treat trauma victims. that is the closest from
holed up, traumatic brain injury building. can you tell us any information about what kind of place this is? >> it might be a place where people go to maybe get medical help. there are several areas on ft. hood where people go to get counseling, to go get health issues taken care of and evaluated. lots of areas like that on forte hoot. hundreds of people go to every day. there is the possibility someone there seeking help could have been affected by this. >> we've been watching live coverage from the local station down at kcen in texas, the site of ft. hood where two or three gunmen dressed in military outfits opened fire. the numbers are a little bit fluid right now. it's either seven or nine people dead, more than 20 wounded. we will continue to follow this throughout the afternoon. we are going to go on to other stories right now. we will be dipping back and forth as we get more information. they do have one of these gunmen
